Day 15

Jesus' Last Days on Earth

Over the next two weeks, we will be sharing with you the Easter story. Each day with have a key verse from the bible, a written extract by a year 6 pupil and a closing prayer.

The Trial

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Mark 15:15

As Jesus stood before the Sanhedrin, people were whispering amongst themselves. Silence was ordered by Caiaphas – the head of the Sanhedrin – so he could talk to Jesus. Jesus was asked, “Are you the Son of God?” Replying in a slow, calm voice, Jesus said, “Yes I am.” Everyone was gasping and people yelled, ‘Blasphemy!’ Shock and horrow  spread through the crowd. Standing quickly, Caiaphas ripped his robes to show he was disowning Jesus. They decided to send him to Pontius Pilot to be judged.

Walking down the aisle of the great hall, Jesus approached Pilot. One of the men told him Jesus had claimed to be king of the Jews and the Son of God. Once again he was asked, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied he was. Pilot sent him off to be flogged, think Jesus was just a dreamer. After his flogging, a group of Roman Soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head, mocking him. As blood dripped down his face, they all laughed. He was sent back to the great hall to be questioned again.

“Are you the Son of God?” asked Pontius Pilot. “Yes,” replied Jesus. Pilot didn’t want any more involvement with Jewish problems so decided to let the people decide his fate. It was tradition at Passover to let a prisoner go free. The crowd had to choose between Jesus and Barabbas.

Running through the large crowd, a few men from the Sanhedrin spread the word, whispering to vote for Barabbas. When Pilot address the crowd, they yelled, “Free Barabbas!”

This troubled Pilot. However, he sent Jesus – the Son of God - to be crucified.
